Feeding of the Five Thousand

Feeding of the Five Thousand

Imagine the centre of Marbella. See the shops, cafes, parks, glamorous people, the poor and the hungry... yes, the poor and hungry, as Father Claudiu Barbut is all too keenly aware. They come to his  church, Iglesia Sto. Cristo del Calvario in Marbella’s Avda del Calvario. They come for food, with requests for shelter, even medicines; as well as those who come to pray or to take part in the numerous activities organised by the church.

A ‘godmother’ of our Club, Graciela Waen from Benahavis Rotary, told us about this remarkable church. Mechthild Dorn from the Social Service Committee visited Father Claudiu last year and helped organise donations of food and clothes on a regular basis. Then last January Father Claudiu came to us with an unusual request – would we donate a pizza oven?

The Club was eventually persuaded that it would be an effective way of providing quick food for large numbers of people and would meet the needs of the church. Mechthild and our Rotarian visitor /restauranteur Ramiro Gago visited the church and obtained some cost estimates for second hand ovens at EUR 1500. Showing a perfectly matched skill set, Einar Askvig found an oven in March for EUR 750 – which he negotiated down to EUR 500 and got a freezer thrown in for free.

The oven has been in use since the 13th April – it was needed for Semana Santa, although the official handing over ceremony was not till 19th June.  And since over twelve hundred people were helped in various ways in 2010 by Caritas Calvario Marbella, it is not hard to imagine that the oven will indeed contribute to the feeding of at least five thousand.
