Cuidad de los Niños

Joyce Versteeg and President Pamela Lake make a visit to Cuidad de los Niños

One of the many charities Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina supports
On a hot morning Joyce and I drove up to the Cuidad de los Niños orphanage and met with Hermano Juan Correa who spent an hour with us showing us around the premises.

We were very impressed at how incredibly clean and tidy everything was. We visited the dormitories, each one sleeping about 5 children and each had a bathroom with showers, toilets etc. So it’s well and simply equipped.

There are 3 common areas to relax, read etc. All the furniture has come from donations. The boys are well disciplined in keeping everything tidy.

This orphanage houses about 42 boys with ages ranging from 7 – 18, different nationalities, some immigrants with their different religions. As they approach 18 the plan is to get them into jobs, or continue their studies, stay with foster parents so that they don’t land in the streets.

The orphanages are part of a Society called Golf In the Sun and was started by a couple, Marie and Barry who in 1950 created the first orphanage and the Malaga one in 1977. They collaborate with the Junta de Andalucia who maintains the upkeep of the buildings. Donations come from everywhere that helps with the upkeep, food,
clothing and there is a long list.

We, RC Marbella-Guadalmina have donated mattress covers earlier in the year for the new mattresses they received and are presently waiting for members to vote for bedspreads which is on the website. Later in the year we will be asking Members to vote for blankets. After such a long time it is the bedding that badly needs to be
renewed so as to keep the children warm and cared for.

This is the link to a short video on the orphanage which is quite informative.

I will make sure our club is mentioned as a donor.
